the study's authors concluded that “greentea has thermogenic properties and promotes fat oxidation beyond that explained by itscaffeine content per se. the green tea extract may play a role in the control of body composition via sympathetic activation of thermogenesis, fat oxidation, or both.†a year later, a second study – 'green teaand thermogenesis: interactions between catechin-polyphenols, caffeine and sympathetic activity' – established that it wasn't just green tea's caffeine content at work. “we report here that a green tea extractstimulates brown adipose tissue thermogenesis to an extent which is much greater than can be attributed to its caffeine content per se, and that its thermogenic properties couldreside primarily in an interaction between
its high content in catechin-polyphenols and caffeine with sympathetically released noradrenaline (na)." subsequent studies validated these findings as well. it was later discovered that another component of green tea affects weight loss as well: it's ability to trigger apoptosis – theprocess of programmed cell death (pcd) – in fat cells. this component of green tea can do the same to mutated cells. the study published in obesity research states that “egcg increased apoptosis in mature adipocytes [cells that make up adipose tissue], as demonstrated by both laser scanning cytometry and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dutp nick-end labeling assays.
furthermore, egcg dose-dependently inhibitedlipid accumulation in maturing preadipocytes.†you're probably wondering 'how much greentea will i need to see results?' well, currently, there's no established dosagethat guarantees weight loss for everyone. but, since green tea contains caffeine, it'sbest to limit your intake to less than twelve 8-ounce cups daily. not that you would need that much green teato see results. how much you will need depends on your individualbiochemistry and starting metabolic rate. i know people who have experienced resultswith only 2-4 cups of green tea per day. but your results may differ.
